The Eye Project on Amorgos blends traditional island architecture with modern design, deeply integrated into the island’s rugged landscape. Drawing inspiration from Amorgos’ historical structures like zevgospita farmhouses and the Monastery of Chozoviotissa, the design honors the island’s simplicity and self-sustaining lifestyle. The site’s challenging topography, with its dramatic slopes and winds, informed the architectural approach, which includes tiered landscaping and wind-sensitive orientation to maximize comfort and natural light. The building’s cave-like structure, strategically positioned to protect from northern winds, is complemented by a traditional structure for added shelter.
The design evokes the spiritual essence of a church or monastery without directly replicating it, creating a ritualistic atmosphere through the use of natural elements like earth and water. The outdoor spaces, featuring an infinity pool blending with the horizon, foster a deep connection to nature. The white volume of the building, inspired by the Monastery of Chozoviotissa, emphasizes minimalism and spiritual calm, contrasting beautifully with the rugged landscape. The project harmoniously fuses tradition with modernity, creating a tranquil sanctuary that respects the island’s history, environment, and culture.
